Parts of Coney Island beach closed after shark sightings
Park officials closed the beach on Coney Island today after sharks were spotted about ten feet from the shore this morning.
Beaches were closed on New York’s Coney Island and in New Jersey when multiple sharks were recorded close to shore.
Lifeguards were ordered to keep the waters clear of humans, as officials determine if the sightings are indeed sharks, or some other type of ocean creature. “People who swim in NY waters are always swimming with sharks”. According to the witnesses, they think they saw about three of the four small sharks swimming in the waters. The evacuation notice from the New York City Parks Department was issued out of abundance of caution. While the predators are usually out of sight from the beach lovers, recent news has confirmed that they have been lurking around areas nearby people, casting enormous fears from the population.
‘As people watch from shore we hope they will remember that sightings like these are opportunities for all New Yorkers to appreciate the wonder, beauty, and diversity of the ocean, ‘ aquarium director Jon Forrest Dohlin said.
“Let’s face it, 25 species – every time you go swimming, you’re swimming with sharks”.
Earlier this month, sharks were also seen for the 17th consecutive year off the coast of Cape Cod. Always be aware of your surroundings and follow beach guidelines, including closures.
