Parts of Midwest see more than a foot of snow
The IL Tollway, which maintains interstate tollways in 11 counties of the state, said it had 185 snowplows ready to go and 84,000 tons of salt stockpiled for the winter. Batavia had 7.5 inches by late afternoon. In Elk Grove, 11.6 inches of snow was recorded. The immediate Madison and Milwaukee areas saw 4 to 7 inches, according to the National Weather Service.
At least 8 inches of snow were likely in much of the Upper Midwest during Saturday, the Weather Channel said.
Southside True Value Hardware manager Matt Krienke said business had been good in the days leading up to the storm, but that it had become “very, very, very, very slick”.
“People who don’t need to drive don’t need to be out”, he said.
This month is catapulted to the fourth snowiest November on record with more than a week remaining. Winter weather advisories are posted for multiple parts of MI, including Detroit, and northern Indiana. Grand Rapids in western MI had about 3 inches.
Storm warnings and advisories were issued throughout northern IN and Michigan’s Lower Peninsula. On social media, residents in McHenry reported more than 14 inches.
The airport also broke snowfall totals on Friday with 4.2 inches.
Snow began to fall early Friday morning across Nebraska and South Dakota.
The slow-moving wintry weather is putting a stop to some flights in the Chicago area.
At Midway global Airport, 195 flights had been canceled and flights were reporting delays of up to half an hour as of Saturday evening, the department said. “It’s just another snowstorm in northern IL”.
The storm that moved into northern IL, IN and southern MI overnight has dumped up to a foot of snow IN some places.
The National Weather Service said Grayslake, Illinois, recorded 17 inches, followed by 16.5 inches in Hawthorn Woods and 15.5 inches in Mundelein, the Chicago Tribune reported. The rest of the north and northwest area are buried in snow between four to eight inches deep, according to The Los Angeles Times.
Behind the front, temperatures fell sharply in Iowa and South Dakota.
The first significant snowstorm of the season blanketed some parts of the Midwest with Janesville receiving several inches of snow. Forecasters say the snow will continue in IL, in and MI before ending Saturday night.
Southeastern South Dakota got up to 18 inches of snow on Friday, Terry said.
