Parts of NJ Turnpike still jammed during evening rush hour
The New Jersey Turnpike posted a photo on Twitter depicting what it said were drooping power lines over the southbound lanes after the crash.
“There was a motor vehicle stop by a trooper in the right lane, and per the Move Over law, you either have to drop down below the speed limit or move over”, Williams said.
As of late Tuesday afternoon, traffic was only moving in the northbound truck lanes.
Significant traffic delays have been reported on roads and highways surrounding the Turnpike, including the Garden State Parkway and Route 1 and… On the southbound side, traffic was jammed as far back as Interstate 280.
Police say the fire may have weakened gas and power lines that run under the overpass, as well as the structure itself.
Police said drivers should expect the closure to remain through the evening rush hour.
Turnpike Authority spokesman Tom Fenney says inspectors will determine whether the overpass is structurally safe.
Accepting this temporary fate, many drivers and passengers got out of their cars this afternoon to sunbathe, play football, and relieve themselves.
New Jersey State Police say the northbound truck lanes are reopening hours after a truck crash and fire closed the New Jersey Turnpike in both directions in Linden. The accident happened on the southbound outer roadway just north of Interchange 12 – Carteret-Rahway, between exits 12 and 13A, around 10:45 a.m. State police described the accident as very serious and said the driver was trapped in the tractor trailer-sized dump truck, which they believe struck the overpass before bursting into flames. Traffic was backed up for miles after the accident.
