Passenger says bus driver seemed to nod off
The CHP said four people suffered moderate injuries, and 13 others suffered minor injuries.
Several passengers were taken to hospital for treatment, he added, without providing an exact number.
The crash reportedly blocked the north and southbound HOV lanes along Highway 101 near Highway 85, according to the CHP.
Five people who suffered serious injuries that required immediate care were taken to a trauma center at a nearby hospital.
The bus left the Gilroy station at 6:03 a.m., and the website did not indicate it had arrived at or departed from any other stations.
There were about 20 people aboard the bus, along with the bus driver.
This story has been corrected to reflect that there were 20 passengers on the bus, not 39. Traffic is backed up on Hwy 101 as only one or two lanes of northbound traffic are being allowed past the bus.
The accident snarled a commute already slowed by rain, bringing parts of 101 to a near standstill.
One of the two women killed in a Greyhound bus crash in Northern California has been identified as 51-year-old Fyle Olivera. Among the passengers transported to local hospitals, three are in stable condition, three are being treated for minor injuries and three have been treated and released. Passengers said the driver appeared to be falling asleep, but police haven’t confirmed that.
No other vehicles were involved in the accident.
“I would describe it as black ice, because it didn’t look slippery”, Hill said. He said the vehicle had “done a complete spin”.
“We still don’t know what caused the accident”, Miceli said.
Greyhound Canada told CBC News that the company was cooperating fully with officials and has launched its own investigation.
