Pastor Mark Burns Regrets Tweet Depicting Hillary Clinton in Blackface
“The tweet was not created to anger or stir up the pot like it did”, Burns said on Periscope, adding that the image was meant to represent his view that the Democratic Party had been “pandering and using black people just for their votes”.
While the offending cartoon might have come down, another image on Burns’ feed which was photoshopped to show Hillary Clinton wearing traditionally African American braids did not.
“I see African Americans in many cases – not every case – but in many cases are suffering throughout this country”, he said.
Pastor Mark Burns, a prominent surrogate for Donald Trump, on Monday tweeted out a cartoon that accuses Hillary Clinton of pandering and portrays her in blackface. “See you again in 4 years”, Burns tweeted with the picture.
Many people are finding it hard to take Burns seriously after his tweet and his confusing apology. “If the Campaign believes these types of actions are the best way to appeal to the African American community, then Trump will end this presidential campaign as the Republican nominee who garnered the lowest support ever from the African American community”.
The tweet also appears to suggest that African-Americans are illiterate, and hate the police. She also sports a shirt that reads “No hot sauce no peace!”
“Obviously in hindsight, I would have used a different methodology to get the message out”, said Burns.
He referenced a photo purported to show Clinton standing beside her husband while in blackface years ago, although the photo has been widely debunked. “And we as African-Americans are Americans. We’re not playing the political PC game to make you feel good”.
He acknowledged that blackface is offensive to black people, but added, “What’s more offensive is not so much that there’s just blackface, but that millions of African-Americans are on welfare, thousands of African-Americans” – and that there is a large disparity in net worth between black and white families. In the early 1970s, Trump was sued by the federal government for alleged violations of federal housing laws regarding black and latino tenants in Trump buildings.
Pastor Burns and Donald Trump will be in Detroit this weekend for an event there.
He then made the same points that Trump has been making about urban centers, but he admitted not talking to Trump about the tweet.
