Rather than devoting Bible school time to children creating their own personal craft items, church members helped the children focus on a local mission project.

According to Greer, the deacons called for him to step down quietly, but Greer refused to do so because of the church bylaws; his parting sermon on July 31 was about racism.
“I wanted the church to know that this is not consistent with the gospel”, he told WTOK.
Black families make up a large percentage of the neighboring community of the church, he said.
“This is not consistent with God’s word that we honor and give dignity to all people”, Greer said. Sterling Baptist Church shares the same view as the deacons who talked with him.
“Our church is not racist”.
