Pastor shoots burglary suspect at church in Baytown
“He retrieved his pistol, he went to investigate, and basically he saw the suspect leaving with some electrical equipment”, Clifford said.
The pastor of The Church of New Beginnings, Benny Holmes, was at the church around 6 a.m. Connecticut when he heard someone trying to break into the building, said Roger Clifford, Baytown police assistant chief.
Baytown police said the shooting happened around dawn Tuesday, and the wounded man was transported to a hospital.
A Texas pastor who once preached that God encourages you to arm yourself, shot a man early Tuesday who was allegedly trying to break into his church. His condition was unclear, but police believe he will likely survive his injury.
It’s the second time in a year Holmes has used his gun in a confrontation.
Holmes made headlines last September when he caught a grandmother stealing packages from his porch and held her down at gunpoint until officers came.
Suspect Joseph Cross, 35, who was not hit, was charged with copper theft but later pleaded guilty to attempted theft and simple criminal damage.
