Patiala House Court violence: Lawyer Vikram Chauhan arrested
Nearly a week since lawyers attacked Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) students and journalists at Patiala House Court, one of the accused, Vikram Chauhan, appeared before Delhi Police on Wednesday. A senior Delhi Police official said Singh has been arrested in connection with two cases of assault when he presented himself to the investigators at Tilak Marg police station responding to summons.
The Supreme Court has agreed to hear a petition that seeks action based on the TV sting that purportedly features the Mr Singh and lawyers Vikram Chauhan and Om Sharma – who were the most prominent of the lawyers involved in the assault on JNU students, teachers and journalists on February 15 and 17.
Justice Suresh Kait granted relief to Singh while asking him to furnish a bail bond of Rs 25,000 with one surety of the like amount.
India Today had aired a sting operation done on two of the three advocates on Monday in which they claimed that they had thrashed Kanhaiya Kumar and he wet his trousers during the beating.
Chauhan appeared before the Delhi Police today after multiple notices were issued for him.
Singh was caught on camera beating journalists and JNU students and teachers along with his colleagues, after which he was arrested and granted bail yesterday from the police station itself.
“Lawyers are also Indian citizens, how can anyone allow anti- India slogans or pro- Pakistan slogans being raised in India?” He went on to say that they had full support of police during the scuffle at the court premises. Several videos of the event have surfaced since the row broke out leading to police arresting Kumar on charges of sedition from the campus triggering widespread protests.
