Patriots release QB Flynn, sign Lindley
Ryan Lindley had one thing that Matt Flynn didn’t. The Patriots are very aware of Lindley’s recent “success” with the Arizona Cardinals and have faith in their system that they can improve upon Lindley’s raw talents and attribute part of his issues with the systems that he’s been playing in.
New England Patriots fans will get a sneak peek at life after Tom Brady’s retirement party this year as Jimmy Garoppolo takes the wheel for the first four games of the regular season.
New England begins its preseason schedule with home game against Green Bay on Thursday evening.
Unless Brady’s appeal is heard before the season starts, he will be benched for the first four games.
Belichick did not rule out bringing back Flynn at some point. Despite his injury, Flynn has had time to learn the playbook, and if Garoppolo was injured or ineffective, he is a much more viable option than Lindley. I know he worked hard.
In his career, which dates back to 2012, Lindley has a 1-6 record as a starter with three touchdown passes, 13 interceptions and only a 51.3 completion percentage.
To be fair, Matt Flynn only attempted 16 passes last season in large part because of the health of league MVP Aaron Rodgers. “We don’t have forever here; the train is moving”, he said. I think the Patriots would have been better off with Flynn in a depth role, as he is trusty veteran who has plenty of starting experience under his belt.
Bill Belichick didn’t exactly have a ringing endorsement for New England Patriots third-string quarterback Ryan Lindley. He has spent time on the practice squads of the Oakland Raiders and St. Louis Rams since entering the NFL undrafted in 2011.
