Patriots WR Edelman to have foot surgery
But to go undefeated in the National Football League is near impossible, and with these latest injuries to the Patriots, it’s looking more and more improbable they get there.
Edelman left Sunday’s 27-26 win over the NY Giants on the final play of the first quarter with a left foot injury.
Patriots-Giants. Every time they play one another, we get a great game. It’s in a slappable position, whereas if you have it in here, you’ve got it well protected within the grasp of your arm, your body and your extra arm can help, too. “Certainly defensively and special teams we did, and offensively I thought we just did enough”.
Coughlin said Beckham approached him in the locker room and said he blamed himself for the loss for allowing CB Malcolm Butler to knock the ball loose in the end zone in the final minutes.
Under those definitions, then, Beckham did not become a runner and so Butler’s strip, despite coming after both of Beckham’s feet had landed in bounds while the ball was secured, rendered the pass incomplete.
“I mean, I caught it”, Beckham said afterwards. He finished this week with two field goals, his second, a 54-yarder, being the game-winner.
Brady was hit throwing the ball and it rainbowed down the middle of the field to a waiting Landon Collins. Givens had 4 catches for only 37 yards. He tried to grab the ball at its high point, seemingly lost his balance and fell to turf, hitting his head and losing the ball. “There were times in the second half where we weren’t able to sustain any drives, that was frustrating in itself”, said an exasperated Tom Coughlin postgame. It was not that far from being a win, we just have to finish it. The frustration will hurt into the bye week and it should. It’s very, very frustrating.
“I lost us the game”, Beckham said.
It proved to be a most welcome distraction from the subject matter at hand with the Pats winning 27-26 on a 54 yard field goal by Steve Gostkowski with one second remaning in the game. The drive ended with Tom Brady finding tight end Scott Chandler in the back of the end zone for a touchdown. Their leading receiver, with 11 catches and two touchdowns, was Julian Edelman. Of course, they still had Brady, who threw for 334 yards, and Gostkowski.
The Giants, still in first place in the NFC East, controlled long portions of the game.
New England is already dealing with the loss of shifty running back Dion Lewis, who was placed on Injured Reserve last week after tearing his ACL in Week 9.
If there was one area that told the tale of this game, it was in the trenches where the Patriots defensive front controlled the action for the most part against the Giants offensive line. With Vollmer sidelined, practice-squad call-up Cameron Fleming started his first career game at left tackle against the Giants and had an up and down performance.
