Paul Merson predicts the outcome of Man Utd v Watford
In an interview on Tuesday [per the Metro], Louis van Gaal revealed that star striker Anthony Martial should be ready to return to the team’s lineup against Watford on Wednesday.
A reason for Watford’s inconsistency may be that of the form of top scorer Odion Ighalo, who has just one goal in 2016. Watford will come to Old Trafford looking to take something from this game and will have no fear as this is a game they will not be expected to get anything from.
Defender Joel Ekstrand, a long-term absentee with a knee injury, is also unavailable. The Red Devils have been stunned by a number of injuries, with up to 17 players now spending time on the treatment table. “A lot of players receive kicks and they can play the next match”, said Van Gaal.
Wayne Rooney is still absent, along with Bastian Schweinsteiger, Phil Jones, Ashley Young and Luke Shaw. “I think Martial can play, [Matteo] Darmian can play and maybe Smalling – we’ll wait and see for tomorrow”.
“He looks really good and I love younger players”.
“I love how he moves into spaces, how he is expecting crosses and moves inside the box”. However, in the absence of the club’s key players, United went on to book their place in the quarterfinals of the FA Cup, the next round in the Europa League thanks to a 5-1 victory and beat Arsenal with a team of kids.
After all, they had a new head coach in Flores that had never previously experienced the demands of the Premier League, while a revolving door seemed to have been installed at Vicarage Road as numerous players came and went.
“Manchester United have had a lot of injuries, a very hard period for them, and this is the moment when the younger players use the opportunity to establish themselves in the team”. He did, however, admit that Rashford’s rise has been “remarkable” and that he could “understand” why he has been given such praise.
Manchester United have won the last 10 matches against Watford in all competitions.
Last November, United ran out 2-1 winners at Vicarage Road thanks to a stoppage-time own goal scored by Watford captain Troy Deeney.
The Dutchman also claimed Marcos Rojo could start Wednesday’s match after being substituted with a knock during the 3-2 win over Arsenal on Sunday.
