Paul Ryan Doesn’t Want Speaker Of The House Job
But the GOP’s 2012 vice presidential nominee showed little appetite for the job.
Ryan’s spokesman, Brendan Buck, said: “Chairman Ryan appreciates the support he’s getting from his colleagues but is still not running for speaker”.
“If he decides to do it, he’d be an awesome speaker”.
“And we’ve got to address those”, said Rep. Roger Williams, R-Texas.
“I’ve talked with Paul Ryan”. He can go home to Wisconsin, watch his beloved Green Bay Packers take on the St. Louis Rams on Sunday, seek counsel from his family – and reflect on whatever advice Romney just gave him.
“The assumption was that McCarthy would have the support of his caucus and we would begin to be able to negotiate the Highway Trust Fund, the debt ceiling, the shutdown and the Export-Import Bank”, Rep. Steve Israel (D-N.Y.), former chairman of the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, said Thursday.
Ryan did cancel a few fundraisers he had on the schedule for this weekend.
“I’m still trying to convince him”, congressman Darrell Issa said.
Not on this list is the far-fetched idea of a “coalition” speaker.
“Paul Ryan is responsible for the House passing bailouts for Wall Street through TARP, with regular folks who are struggling to make ends meet paying the bill”, one senior House GOP aide for an influential conservative member told Breitbart News. “Paul has a driving passion to get America back on a path of growth and opportunity”, he added. However, it was apparent that the California Republican lacked the support of the 218 members necessary to guarantee his election by the full House, which had been scheduled to vote on October 29.
McCarthy denied earlier this week that his decision to withdraw from the speaker’s race was related to a letter from one backbench lawmaker demanding that any candidate with embarrassing misdeeds in his past should withdraw. “But he’s got small kids”.
So GOP lawmakers, from Boehner and McCarthy on down, turned to Ryan, 45, the only figure in the House seen as having the stature, wide appeal and intelligence to lead Republicans out of the mess they’re in.
Boehner said he would postpone the vote, but it was not immediately clear when it would take place.
I’m just, actually, seeing right now that Paul Ryan may consider pondering House Speakership over the weekend. “He outreaches to the most conservative and the most moderate and those in the middle of the party”.
“I mean, if Paul chose to run, he would be elected probably unanimously, as close as to unanimous as you could be”, said Rep. Peter King, R-New York. Mr. Ryan has said he isn’t interested, but conservatives like Mr. Rothfus are hoping he rethinks that over the next week when Congress is in recess. So, it’s not always about the personality; a lot has to do with the process.
Westmoreland, too, said, “I think he’s the only guy who can unite us right now”. “That’s what we’re all telling him”.
