Paul Ryan requires ‘pause’ in admitting Syrian refugees to US
While that’s highly unlikely, the prospect at least created a deadline for acting on the refugee issue.
Speaking on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, House Speaker Paul Ryan called the attacks “pure evil”.
Ryan said the “pause” he is advocating would be targeted.
“This is a moment when it’s better to be safe than to be sorry”.
Newly minted House Speaker Paul Ryan (R-Wis.) Tuesday called for the White House to “pause” their Syrian refugee resettlement program, citing national security risks in the wake of last Friday’s terror attacks in Paris.
More than 2,000 Syrian refugees have been admitted to the US already since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011. The Alabama Republican advised attaching policy riders onto upcoming appropriations bills, including the omnibus bill which could lead to a government shutdown if it isn’t passed by December 11. Only one Democrat has signed on as a co-sponsor of the bill as of Tuesday night. “It’s Republicans and Democrats who are anxious about this”.
“All of us are God’s children…so I disagree with that assumption that only Christian children should be able to come to the United States”, Sen.
“If we don’t know much about somebody, there won’t be anything in our data”, Comey said, although he assured the screening process has “improved dramatically” over time.
“I have always believed, and I’ve been public about this for many years, for younger people, when they age, we should change the retirement age to reflect longevity”, he said, according to a CBS transcript. John Thune of South Dakota, the third-ranking Republican.
But Abraham said the administration has yet to respond to a letter he sent in September asking for information about the vetting process.
“The governors’ announcements amount to fear-mongering attempts to block Syrians from joining the generous religious groups and communities who step forward to welcome them”, she added.
Sen. Richard Shelby, R-Ala., disagreed.
Similar calls are coming from presidential candidates, and a number of GOP governors have announced plans to try to keep out Syrian refugees, though they appear to lack legal authority to do so.
“We don’t want to wait that long”, Ryan said in response to using the spending bill as a vehicle to deal with the refugee issue.
Since his election to Speaker of the House of Representatives, Ryan said immigration reform will not be considered during the remainder of the 114th Congress and while President Barack Obama remains in office.
“Our first priority must be protecting the safety of American citizens”.
There are a few lawmakers who agree with Gingrich.
But does that mean Republicans would not add that language to a must-pass spending bill?
“I do not”, Ryan said when asked if he supported Trump’s proposal to deport the more than 11 million immigrants now in the USA illegally.
“I think there are a lot of options on the table”, said Rep. Matt Salmon of Arizona, a member of the Freedom Caucus.
“Background checks need to be redoubled in terms of refugees but if we’re talking about threats to the United States, let’s put this in perspective”, he said. “We can also ensure that when those people decide to go back and fix their country when it’s safe to do so that they are in close proximity”.
