Paul Ryan won’t defend or campaign for Trump ahead of election
Ryan did not withdraw his endorsement of Trump.
Ryan’s announcement underscored the perilous predicament Republicans find themselves in one month from Election Day. Recent revelations of Trump’s predatory sexual comments about women deepened the worries among GOP officials who fear he’ll drag down their own electoral prospects in November.
The former state lawmaker said as a husband and father he was “especially appalled” by Trump’s 2005 remarks. In little more than an hour, Ford would drop a bombshell that would ultimately cost him the 1976 election.
Both candidates had winning moments in Sunday’s debate and both left meat on the bone.
Trump’s campaign was already struggling before the video was released, partly because of his uneven performance in the first presidential debate. Their commanding majority in the House could now be in peril, too.
Afterward, a person who listened to the call said the reaction wasn’t entirely positive – and that Ryan’s comments angered some GOP members who believed the Speaker was essentially conceding the presidential contest to Clinton. But pro-Trump GOP House members got that impression, pushing back and saying Trump can still prevail and should not be abandoned.
Walker and Johnson also avoided talking about Trump at a Republican rally on Saturday.
Almost half of all 332 incumbent Republican senators, congress members and governors have condemned Trump’s remarks, and roughly 1 in 10 have called on him to drop out of the race, according to a Reuters review of official statements and local news coverage.
“Donald Trump didn’t become the nominee of his party on his own”, said Jennifer Palmieri, Clinton’s communications director. But while the George Patakis of the world called on Trump to step down as nominee, those with political futures walked a finer line.
“My position has been that I support the Republican ticket; I have not endorsed him and I haven’t decided who I’m voting for”, Faso said in a Monday morning interview with the Times Union. However, many Republicans pulled their support for the nominee over the weekend.
Ryan said this was about the members of the party, not himself, according to a source on the call.
Mike Pence, Donald Trump’s vice presidential running mate, has called off a campaign appearance he had scheduled for Monday in New Jersey.
Kellyanne Conway said Monday that such a decision isn’t up to Trump.
“It’s just awfully good that someone with the temperament of Donald Trump is not in charge of the law in our country”.
Mike Pence says faith instructs him on the importance of forgiveness, suggesting Donald Trump was a “big man” for admitting he was wrong to make vulgar remarks about women. Ryan previously pulled Trump’s invitation to a campaign event in Wisconsin over the weekend.
He also attacked Bill Clinton’s treatment of women and said Hillary Clinton should be in jail for her use of a private email server while secretary of state.
During the debate at Washington University in St. Louis, the GOP nominee apologized for the video comments while dismissing them as nothing more than “locker room talk”.
