Paxton Lynch seeing better Broncos starting shot as Mark Sanchez slips
Siemian also started last weekend’s preseason game against the San Francisco 49ers, and went 10 for 14, for 75 yards with no touchdowns and an interception. He landed with the Philadelphia Eagles in 2014 and put up some respectful numbers while filling in for the injured Nick Foles in Chip Kelly’s offense.
“We’ll see how it goes once he starts throwing”, Kelly said in a conference call. “The biggest thing is we have to see how he responds, in terms of if there are any residual effects when he wakes up tomorrow morning”.
What makes Kaepernick’s return interesting is the 49ers got solid play out of sixth-round draft pick Jeff Driskel as well as Christian Ponder, who practiced for the first time Wednesday.
While that doesn’t yet mean that Siemian will be the team’s starter when the Broncos open the season September 8 against the Carolina Panthers, he will get the last best look with the starters before coach Gary Kubiak makes the call.
The only sack came against Driskel. Lynch has completed 64 percent of his passes for 187 yards and two touchdowns.
“I expected it, I expected it”, Kubiak said. I think he likely still makes the roster, but it is something to keep an eye on. While the quarterback said he plays “a mean guitar”, his vocals need some fine-tuning.
The smart money is on either Mark Sanchez or Trevor Siemian jogging out with the first-string offense and a quick trigger finger by Kubiak, who will want some type of clarity heading into the final matchup of the preseason against the Cardinals and won’t be afraid to yank an underperformer. “He’s gotten better and better each day”, Kelly said. DuJuan Harris fumbled at the goal line for a second straight game. Quarterback Blaine Gabbert has made it a point to get the ball to McDonald. While there’s a belief that, once Lynch gets the job, it will be impossible to go back to the other two, the benching of one of the all-time great quarterbacks followed by the benching of his 5-2 replacement shows that the Broncos are willing to shove the revolving door at the most important position on the field.
-Running back Shaun Draughn was held out due to a ribs injury, which occurred during a practice with the Broncos.
Ball security is stressed daily by running backs coach Tom Rathman, and Kelly said there is no clear pattern to the fumbling issues. Kubiak and his boss, one John Elway, don’t like turnovers, especially when you have the best defensive unit on the planet to keep you in contention. It may officially count as a game played, but as far as I am concerned he has not played a game in the NFL. He has been sacked three times behind what has been a bad makeshift offensive line.
“He helped us get to where we wanted to those two years in a row”, Revis said.
-Kelly said he had not yet met with the medical staff, so there was no update on the knee injuries of linebacker Nick Bellore and wide receiver Bryce Treggs.
