Payday 2 microtransactions have community up in arms
As microtransactions continue to test gamers’ patience with their frequently aggressive implementation, Payday 2 players have been told by developers Overkill Software on two separate occasions that their game will never feature paid items outside of its DLC.
The first update of Crimefest, titled “The Black Market”, introduces a Safe item into the game, which drops randomly after a completed heist. Since PayDay 2 is co-op and all enemies are AI bots, you don’t need to worry about it negatively affecting balance. We’re aware that there are those of you who are unhappy or concerned about the Black Market update. Those safes are hard to open, and require a special drill in order to be breached.
Microtransactions can be frustrating money grabs that can make an already purchased game feel incomplete.
While it’s easy to see the appeal for microtransactions from a developer or publisher’s point of view, when you backpedal after making very clear assertions against it in a specific game like was done in this case, it’s a choice that can very easily make you lose credibility and trust with your consumer.
Skins can be resold or traded among players.
In general it sounds pretty similar to Team Fortress 2’s crate and key system, but of course Team Fortress 2 is free-to-play while PayDay 2 still costs $20 – although it’s on sale for at the moment. Goldfarb has since left, though he said he didn’t leave because of any disagreement with the company. Here’s a big Reddit thread entitled “f*** you overkill”, and here’s the Steam page, which is in the process of being drowned in negative reviews.
