Pederson Will Be Eagles Coach
According to Philadelphia Daily News sports reporter Les Bowen, the Eagles will name Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson as their next head coach when they are officially allowed to do so.
As Favre came jogging to the sideline during a stoppage of play in that particular game, Reid noticed where Favre went first, which solidified in his mind the coaching future of the now-Kansas City Chiefs offensive coordinator. “No further interviews are scheduled”.
It was shortly before 8 a.m. on Thursday when reports surfaced that the Eagles wanted to meet again with Coughlin about their vacancy. Some possible targets on teams still playing include Carolina defensive coordinator Sean McDermott, who was the Eagles’ defensive coordinator in 2009 and 2010; and New England offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels and defensive coordinator Matt Patricia.
In Philadelphia, Pederson will have to basically start over. This is key as the organization was reportedly interested because of his ties to Andy Reid.
Pederson, 47, declined to comment Saturday on the Eagles’ coaching job but said he will talk in the next few days. They met with Chiefs offensive coordinator Doug Pederson on Sunday morning. Lurie fired Chip Kelly after three years and wants a new coach who can make an emotional attachment with the players – a skill Kelly never mastered in Philadelphia.
It also seemed to point to Shurmur, the Philly offensive coordinator the past two seasons and one of the candidates for the head coaching gig, as the likely victor. Coached four years with the Eagles? He played college football at Northeast Louisiana, now known as Louisiana-Monroe. Of course, there is also the possibility that Pederson won’t be available to actually work on personnel matters if the Chiefs continue winning right up through the Super Bowl on February 7.
That may have been the clinching moment for Reid, but it certainly wasn’t the first time he saw a future coach in the backup quarterback. The key to the plan was drafting a franchise quarterback. In Pederson, signed by the Eagles as a free agent, Reid found a veteran quarterback who could start until McNabb was ready. Pederson played and coached in the NFL.
After all, they had a young, talented quarterback in McNabb that he felt would benefit from Pederson’s presence. It was also important for the team to have a veteran quarterback who would run the offense correctly as his teammates learned it. You guys know Reid well enough and know that he hardly says anything in his press conferences.
From 2005-08, Pederson served as the head coach of the Cavaliers in Shreveport. He did have issues at his second head coaching destination, and left Arizona State with a 40-34 record. But the Eagles obviously didn’t do a very good job of presenting their case to Gase, who appears to have been their favorite.
