Pence’s Indiana record more complicated than campaign claims
Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump arrives on stage to greet Republican vice presidential nominee Mike Pence, the governor of IN, during Wednesday’s events at the Republican National Convention IN Cleveland.
Though Cruz congratulated Trump on his win, some delegates prodded him toward the end to throw his support behind the nominee, chanting “Trump, Trump” – Cruz paused, but closed his address with no endorsement, as the boos in the audience grew louder.
Way back on November 16, Governor Pence directed his state agencies to suspend payments to the agencies that profit by redistributing tax money to people from Syria.
“It’s a long time ago, and he voted that way and they were also misled”, Trump answered.
Invoking his first favorite Republican – Ronald Reagan – before turning to his newest favorite – Donald Trump – Pence said Reagan used to talk about speeding along in a motorcade and wishing he could reach out and touch the people waiving alongside the road.

Pence “was clearly pandering to some extreme players in the party here in Indiana”, Oesterle says, “and that was a sign to all of us that he was deviating from what he had told us he was going to do”. He will undoubtedly describe himself as a Christian, a conservative and a Republican, in that order. Indiana’s status and the governor’s record are not as glowing as he portrays it, but one expects some hyperbole at a national convention.
“Let’s resolve here and now that Hillary Clinton will never become the president of the United States of America”.
Pence flirted with running for president in 2012, in part because some conservative activists urged him to do so.
“He’s a father and a patriot”, Pence said of Trump in what may be a preview of his vice presidential acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention on Wednesday.
However, the real argument here is that Pence simply took over for his predecessor – Indiana’s Republican governor Mitch Daniels, who kept the IN ship on course through the housing crisis.
After being introduced by Speaker of the House Paul Ryan as “a man of solid character”, Pence opened his remarks by accepting the official vice presidential nomination. “Grounded in our shared values and our hope for the future, today our friendship is highlighted by a remarkable entrepreneurial spirit shared between our two nations”, Pence said in a statement ahead of that 2014 trip. But only once in the 1970s was there another income tax cut. The law was blocked by a federal judge, but not before Pence had closed down every abortion clinic not equipped with a full complement of funeral bag pipers, you know, for the woman’s safety. “If you love our country … stand and speak, and vote your conscience, vote for candidates up and down the ticket who you trust to defend our freedom and to be faithful to the Constitution”. “So Trump needed to burnish his conservative credentials”, he said. Pence says Democrat Hillary Clinton will never serve as president.
Delegate John Stricklett, from the 8th congressional district, said Pence does not now disagree with Trump. In Pence’s state, having a miscarriage could land you in jail for 20 years, so if you’re driving through in, and the contractions start, cross your legs and don’t stop til you’re in Chicago.
Pence’s speech was a bit of a do-over after he was overshadowed by Donald Trump at Saturday’s unveiling of the ticket in NY.
