Pence tries to win over conservatives despite Trump gaffes
When questioned about how the USA could deport someone who’s done nothing wrong, Nehlen answered, “If somebody is supporting Sharia, that is doing something wrong”.
Campaign chairman Paul Manafort insisted Trump would work with Ryan if elected, but he conceded the endorsement question had sparked tension inside Trump’s NY campaign headquarters.
He later added that he was only talking about deporting “Sharia compliant” Muslims from the country. “Go ahead and do it. One-hundred percent, ‘” Trump said. “If the Muslim is Sharia compliant, that is in direct conflict with the U.S. Constitution”, Nehlen said.
McCain’s primary opponent, Dr. Kelli Ward, put out a statement after Pence’s initial answer, slamming her rival for criticizing Trump and his supporters.
“If Paul Ryan is re-elected, if he’s sent back to Congress, he will push for the biggest amnesty in this country’s history; and immediately after his re-election, he will push Obama’s jailbreak crime agenda”.
When some in the crowd in Portland, Maine, began to boo at the mention of Ryan’s name, Trump stopped them by saying, “Paul Ryan’s a good guy, actually”.
Before that, six veterans, including a Muslim veteran from McCain’s home state of Arizona, praised the former Vietnam prisoner of war as “courageous” and a “man of honor” in pleading with him to reject Trump.
House Speaker Paul Ryan stood by his endorsement of Donald Trump Thursday, but didn’t rule out withdrawing it at some point in the future should he deem that necessary.
“I like Paul, but these are frightful times for our country”. We need very, very strong leadership. “I’m not quite there yet”, Trump told the Post.
Trump told The Post that Nehlen, who has been reliably pro-Trump, was running “a very good campaign”, but he also said he didn’t offer his support and he was merely thanking him for “sending their love”.
Ryan joined McCain and Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to disavow Trump’s attacks on the Khan family, whose son died while serving in Iraq. Ryan said “none of these things are ever blank checks”, repeating a line he has used previously.
Former Trump adviser Barry Bennett acknowledged signs of poor morale among the campaign staff he maintains contact with, but he also said it would be silly dismiss Trump’s chances with three months before Election Day.
But he also says that Trump “has had a pretty unusual run since the convention”.
“And I’m very confident after Donald Trump’s elected president and Paul Ryan’s re-elected to Congress and as speaker of the House, these two men are gonna do great things to restore this country at home and overseas”, he said.
Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton holds up a Donald Trump tie, which isn’t made in America, as she speaks at Knotty Tie Company in Denver, Wednesday, Aug. 3, 2016.
“When Donald Trump becomes President, we’re going to cut taxes, cut red tape, repeal Obamacare, and we’re going to unleash the unbridled energy of the American economy and the American worker”, Pence said. It struck me that Manafort was doing a bit of the blame-game – the reason for the recent snafus isn’t me, it’s Trump. I don’t want to do this.
Ryan says it’s “distressing” that that’s not what the conversation is about. “Because I feel I have to, in order to defend Republicans, and our principles, so that people don’t make the mistake of thinking we think like that”.
