Penn says he has nothing to do with ‘El Chapo’ Guzmán’s recapture
The star also accused the Mexican government of releasing details of his secret meeting, and defended the interview.
The actor, who has won Oscars for Mystic River and Milk, said he met Guzman “many weeks” before his arrest, in a location far from where the kingpin fell into police hands in northern Mexico six months after the prison break.
Though, as Rose noted, Penn may have concerns larger than journalistic envy to contend with, such as the Mexican government and those in El Chapo’s cartel who may believe the actor is responsible for their leader’s apprehension.
However the actor refuted the claim.
In an interview with CBS’s “60 Minutes, ‘ Penn said that Mexican government’s claims that his interview with Joaquin ‘El Chapo” Guzman led to the fugitive’s eventual capture are false.
“You’re saying there’s not much dialogue about -” Rose began.
“We have an image of Chapo and his entourage as extremely sophisticated in terms of security and communication”, she says, “this thread of communication implies that they are not”. But the public’s attention has been focused instead on how Penn found and met with him last October when Mexican officials couldn’t. While authorities narrowly missed capturing Guzman when they raided the hideout where the meeting took place in October, they finally got him on Friday. We didn’t, we’re not smarter than the DEA (Drug Enforcement Administration) or the Mexican intelligence.
He did not say who had organized the meeting with Guzman, but said he had a contact “facilitate an invitation”.
When asked if he was fearful for his life, Penn said “no”.
Mexican actress Kate del Castillo also participated in the interview. That was my simple idea. The Rolling Stone article set off a bombshell, including criticism over the magazines willingness to give Guzman approval of the article before it was published. “You get another death the next day the same way”, Penn said.
“I have a bad regret”, Penn said in the interview. “I don’t make that judgment for everyone else”.
The diminutive drug lord underwent male-enhancement surgery at a Tijuana hospital, where he received a testicular implant to improve blood circulation in his manhood, Reforma newspaper reported.
“You are the best of this world”, he tells del Castillo.
His interview was published last Saturday in Rolling Stone, triggering a barrage of criticism, including condemnation of Penn himself.
“I have a fleet of submarines, airplanes, trucks and boats”, El Chapo added. “It’s a lie, absurd speculation from Mr Penn”. “In a way, yes, it does complicate it (his defense)”.
For his part, Penn said he had only one true mission.
