Police were called to a domestic situation in New Florence shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday.
Officials said Shetler was arrested without incident Sunday morning after he was spotted on Route 711 in New Florence.
Luther told dispatchers Shetler was drunk and had hit her. The dispatchers could hear arguing and things breaking, Limani said.
Shetler told police he fired only because someone shot at him first, and that he didn’t know Reed was an officer, investigators wrote in a criminal complaint.
Reed arrived at the scene and identified himself as a police officer before shots were fired, Peck said.
The New Florence Fire Chief told Pittsburgh’s Action News 4 authorities are not allowing people to travel through the town.
Mr. Shetler told state police in an interview at Conemaugh Memorial Medical Center that he did not know Officer Reed was a police officer. “Most are very volatile … very hurtful”, state police Trooper Stephen Limani said.
County Sheriff Jonathan Held described Reed as “a dedicated officer, down to earth”. Police on Monday were still searching for Shetland’s.270-caliber rifle, which the suspect said he lost while swimming across a river to avoid police.
Officer Reed, a police veteran with more than 25 years experience – including 5 years with the St. Clair Township Police Department – was pronounced dead after he was taken to be treated at an area hospital.
