People Shot a Block from 4th Precinct Protests
Protests have been taking place near the precinct since the November 15 police shooting death of Jamar Clark, a 24-year-old black man.
Those who were shot were hospitalized with non-life-threatening injures, deputy police chief Medaria Arradondo said, as cited by the newspaper.
On its Facebook page, Black Lives Matter Minneapolis called the shootings an act of “domestic terrorism”.
“Dozens of officers responded nearly immediately attending to victims and secured the scene”, the department said in its statement. Witnesses claim Clark was handcuffed and unarmed when shot, while police union officials say Clark was never handcuffed and attempted to grab an officer’s gun.
Police tweeted early Tuesday that officers are searching for three white male suspects in the shooting that occurred shortly before 11 p.m. about a block from the 4th Precinct.
Both Black Lives Matter organizers and the Minneapolis NAACP have called on authorities to release video of the shooting.
Funeral plans are set for a black man whose fatal shooting by Minneapolis police has sparked protests.
Police said they believe the victims and suspect/suspects knew each other.
According to the Washington Post and the Minneapolis Star-Tribune, Minneapolis officials say that on the night of the shooting, paramedics were attempting to help an assault victim but were being interrupted by Clark. “But in light of tonight’s shootings, the family feels out of imminent concern for the safety of the occupiers, we must get the occupation of the 4th precinct ended and onto the next step”, the statement said.
Protests have been ongoing since his death.
Authorities say that there is footage from multiple sources but that it doesn’t show the full incident and making the recordings public would compromise their investigations.
As protests gained strength last week, Minneapolis Mayor Betsy Hodges also asked the Justice Department to open a federal civil rights investigation into the shooting.
On Tuesday morning, about 50 protesters were outside of the 4th Precinct, and more were trickling in.
