‘People v. O. J. Simpson: American Crime Story’ Sweeps Emmys

It’s almost showtime and several Emmy Awards show attendees are seeking respite from the 90-degree weather outside, lining up inside the Microsoft Theater lobby to purchase $9 glasses of bubbly from a concession stand.

Kerry Washington, who is pregnant with her second child, wore a strapless gown that had a front cutout for her baby bump.

While women’s fashion is most scrutinized on the red carpet, a few actors gained attention.

The FX series also took home the Emmy for best writing, best casting and best hairstyling for a limited series, movie or special.

Jeffrey Tambor captured his second consecutive best comedy actor trophy for “Transparent”, in which he plays a transgender character.

Turning serious a moment later, she fought back tears as she dedicated the award to her father, who died Friday.

“If it wasn’t for television, would Donald Trump be running for president?” Later, “Veep” Emmy victor Julia Louis-Dreyfus “apologized” for the current political climate.

“Our show started out as political satire”, she said, “but now it feels like a sober documentary”. She had promised to bring the former prosecutor to Sunday’s Emmys.

Her victory gave her six best comedy wins – five for “Veep”, one for “The New Adventures of Old Christine” – and broke her tie with Candice Bergen and Mary Tyler Moore.

Besides “Mr. Robot” and “House of Cards”, “GOT” will compete with “Better Call Saul”, “Homeland”, “The Americans” and the farewell season of “Downton Abbey”. It was her third win for playing the formidable dowager.

She was alert, sipping water and smiling but had become dehydrated.

Supporting Actor, Drama Series: Ben Mendelsohn, “Bloodline”. The series has won 11 Emmys this year, including the duo tonight. The loss “makes a lot of sense”, Damon said.

Leading the charge is FX’s behind-the-scenes “The People v O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story”, which won 22 nominations on the wave of a true crime trend in television coupled with a contemporary backdrop of racial tension.

Louie Anderson is the victor of the Emmy Award for best supporting actor in a comedy series.

“Mom, we did it!”, Anderson shouted, hoisting his trophy and dedicating the award to his late mother, Ora Zella Anderson.

“I’m so glad that he liked “Veep” because his opinion was the one that really mattered”, she said.

For her part, Kate McKinnon thanked Hillary Clinton when she accepted her best supporting actress in a comedy series award for her work on “Saturday Night Live”. But she knew who to credit. “Big fan of yours, too”. He advised Kimmel that “if you run a positive campaign, the voters will ultimately make the right choice”- then told Kimmel curtly it was a joke.

Later in the opening, Kimmel blamed “Celebrity Apprentice” producer Mark Burnett for making Trump famous.

In an attempt at comedy that fell flat, the ceremony announcer indicated that Bill Cosby would be taking the stage.

“Marcia, this must be very odd for you”, Kimmel said.
