Perez denies Real broke rules over fielding Cheryshev
Real Madrid face nearly certain expulsion from the Spanish Kings Cup knockout competition after fielding an ineligible player in their third round first leg tie away to Cadiz on Wednesday night.
Madrid plays its first game at the Santiago Bernabeu since then against Getafe on Saturday.
Cheryshev was removed before halftime after Real Madrid realized its error.
“Real Madrid did not know about it as we were not told by the player, Villarreal or the federation”.
“The penalty Cheryshev was given while playing for Villarreal is ineffective in our view, no one had mentioned the sanction to the player”, Perez told reporters.
Speaking about the managerial role in Real Madrid, Perez backed Benitez despite the oversight, “I spoke yesterday with the coach”.
Piqué went on to suggest that players usually remember when they’re suspended: “I recall being shown my fifth yellow card one year against Atlético, in the last league match of the season”. It’s a sad situation, very sad. We have outstanding people who control our sanctions, I don’t now what other clubs have.
A verdict is expected to be made by the federation on Friday.
In essence, this mistake could essentially begin the end of Madrid’s season.
Fielding an ineligible player could lead to Real Madrid being disqualified from the tournament, however the club claims that the failure on the part of the tournament to notify it of the suspension should nullify the punishment.
However, the Russian lined up for the clash at Estadio Ramon de Carranza, eventually being replaced 45 seconds into the second half. Cheryshev scored the opening goal before being substituted at half-time.
Earlier, Cheryshev confirmed he did not receive notification from his former club that he would be banned. His inability to get his offensive stars clicking, the supposed tensions with top players and the 4-0 pounding at the hands of Barcelona in Madrid have put him up against the wall.
