A political consultant told jurors Thursday that he “conspired” with Pennsylvania Attorney General Kathleen Kane to pin a grand jury leak on her top deputy. She’s facing charges for perjury, obstruction, official oppression and other offenses.
Morrow testified that he helped Kane leak secret materials to The Daily News to embarrass prosecutors who’d worked under her predecessor, Attorney General Tom Corbett.
“I listened to the commonwealth’s case and I don’t believe it’s necessary for me to testify”, Kane said.
Kane also is accused of lying to the 35th statewide grand jury in November 2014 to cover up her alleged leaks by lying under oath when she claimed she never agreed to maintain her secrecy regarding the 2009 grand jury investigation.
Reese, who continues to work for Kane in another department, was convicted previous year of illegally accessing emails regarding the grand jury probe of Kane.
Kane’s fate will be placed in the hands of the jury Monday after both sides sum up their cases for the jury of six men and six women.
Kathleen Kane’s trial is set to resume Friday morning in suburban Philadelphia, a day after a political consultant told jurors that he “conspired” with her to pin a grand jury leak on her top deputy. He became collateral damage when a story ran in 2014, they said.
Morrow is testifying with a grant of immunity.
Authorities say she violated the state’s grand jury laws and tarnished an NAACP official who was investigated but never charged. But King said that he didn’t know it contained secret criminal files and that Kane is trying to frame him.
On cross examination by the defense, Morrow admitted he sent a text saying “I hope she goes away”. Demchick-Alloy asked Kane out of earshot of jurors. Her demeanor was noticeably different when they met again two months later at a park in Dunmore, where Reese once again checked Morrow to see if he was wearing a wire, he said.
Also testifying Friday was Gabriel Stahl, an analyst and investigative services coordinator in the attorney general’s office.
The resulting story that appeared in the Philadelphia Daily News in June 2014 seriously damaged the reputation of Mondesire, who died a year ago.
Chris Brennan, the reporter who wrote the Daily News article, testified Friday morning as well.
A key witness for the commonwealth’s case testified yesterday.
Kane was summoned to the witness stand by Montgomery County Judge Wendy Demchick-Alloy when her defense lawyer, Gerald Shargel, rested the defense’s case without asking anyone to testify.
