Person familiar with decision: Memphis hires Arizona State coordinator Mike
Mike Norvell has led some top-flight offenses at Arizona State.
According to Geoff Calkins of The Commercial Appeal, Memphis is set to hire Arizona State offensive coordinator Mike Norvell. Miami will introduce Richt as its new coach Friday. Norvell was promoted in December 2013, when there was speculation he would take a head-coaching job elsewhere.
Norvell, 34, is considered one of the sharpest young offensive minds in the country, as he’s run Arizona State’s high-powered spread offense for the past four years.
The University of Memphis has hired a head football coach to replace Justin Fuente. Prior to coming to ASU, he served under Todd Graham at both Tulsa and Pittsburgh.
Norvell was a four-year starter at Central Arkansas, finishing his career as the school’s all-time leader in receptions (213) and ranked third in receiving yards (2,611).
Memphis is 9-3 this season after going 10-3 last season and playing in a bowl for the first time in six years.
Norvell got his coaching start as a graduate assistant for the Bears, working with the team’s running backs, receivers and special teams unit. They then continued on to Arizona State the following season.
