Person in Custody, Three Culpeper County Schools on Modified Lockdown
A pellet gun was later found.
One person was taken into custody after Culpeper County High School officials reported a student with a weapon on a school bus Wednesday morning, according to the Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office.
“The student had made statements in a very descriptive way of what he meant to do with the gun, to shoot other people”, Jenkins said during a midafternoon briefing.
“We were initially told that there was a threat at the school”, said O’Brien. The student first made threats and showed a weapon Tuesday, the authority said. However, the lockdown continued out of protocol, Jenkins said. Teachers then alerted the on-site school resource officer.
But none of the students were sure if the gun and the student actually entered the school from the bus. The students location is unknown at this time and it is believed he may be at a location away from school.
Dozens of law enforcement are now on the scene.
“Today it took two hours to notify school staff”, Jenkins said.
“I don’t want to give him any attention that he might have wanted”, Jenkins said.
Jenkins said the boy surrendered Wednesday to sheriff’s deputies outside of school and the pellet gun was recovered at his residence.
By 11:40 the student had contacted the police and made arrangements to meet and turn himself in, according to Jenkins.
He chose not to publicly give the suspect’s name.
No charges have been filed yet, but the student is still being held and questioned.
Culpeper County Public Schools said around 1:45 p.m. that the schools had resumed their normal routines, and parents wishing to pick up their children could do so.
There were no injuries and Virginia State Police are assisting the sheriff’s office with the investigation.
There was a heavy police presence at the schools.
