Pete Carroll, Seahawks punished for excessive contact in pre-season practice
Seahawks fined $400,000 for excessive off-season workouts and Pete Carroll fined $200,00 for it.
More notably among the Seahawks active fifth-round draft picks are safety Kam Chancellor, cornerback Richard Sherman, and tight end Luke Wilson.
The Seattle Seahawks, Super Bowl champions of two seasons ago, have been fined $400,000 and will also forfeit their fifth-round selection in the 2017 Draft for violating offseason workout rules, the National Football League said on Monday. Seahawks’ players will be paid for the cancelled sessions. The Seahawks also will forfeit their first week of OTAs (covering three days) in 2017.
Kevin Patra of NFL.com reports should the Seahawks violate the rule again, they’ll be significantly penalized, including the potential loss of preseason and regular season practices and higher-round draft picks.
The NFL and NFLPA independently reviewed Seattle’s June 6 on-field practice video and agreed the team violated the “no-live-contact” rule of the collective bargaining agreement. “The rules also help to prevent any team from gaining a competitive advantage”.
In a letter to the club, the National Football League referenced a portion of the CBA that prohibits excessive contact in all offseason workouts.
The Seahawks previously were disciplined for excessive on-field physical contact during its 2014 mandatory minicamp.
Should this punishment fail to lead to any change in the Seahawks’ behavior in future offseasons, the National Football League has said any further violations will be met with “significantly higher fines, the cancellation of future OTA days, minicamp days, preseason or regular season practices, as well as the forfeiture of higher-round or multiple draft selections”. The league announced no fine, but ESPN reported the team and Carroll were collectively fined $300,000.
