Pete Mackanin Will Manage Phillies In 2016
It’s also uncertain whether Jennings will return to his former job of general manager. The Phillies are 27-32 since the All-Star break.
The Phillies have officially named Pete Mackanin as their next manager, removing the interim label and extending his contract the 2016 season with a club option for 2017, the team announced on Tuesday.
“As odd as this might sound, I put it out of my mind”, Mackanin had said, upon Amaro’s departure. “It’s a positive thing”.
The next general manager of the Phillies will have one fewer task. My vote is bring him back, see what he can do for a full season.
Pete Mackanin is no longer the interim manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. With Andy MacPhail set to take over as the new president, it seemed like a foregone conclusion that he’d want to hire his own manager to lead the club, however that is not the case.
Ultimately, MacPhail’s managerial choice was the right one. He reiterated that point yesterday, saying it was a “critical time” for the organization and that the other route could mean losing “half your offseason”. Whoever the new general manager ends up being will have power, but not more than MacPhail, so this keeps that in perspective.
Mackanin replaced Ryne Sandberg after a 26-48 start to the season before resigning on June 26. You are the manager of the Philadelphia Phillies. He also has interviewed with the Cubs, Astros and Red Sox.
Mackanin generated some headlines recently for benching promising rookie Odubel Herrera for “pouting”.
The timing of the announcement is interesting.
That said, the poor season didn’t come as a surprise. The two had a positive conversation. When I was younger I would have. “Whether I’m the interim or not”.
Mackanin was a bench coach with the Phillies from 2009 through 2013.
“He’s able to speak our language”, Giles said of Mackanin, who is known for being equal parts laid-back and sarcastic in the clubhouse. Same with the manager. The manager runs the game with input from the GM. ” … Somebody was in that office in that chair and they were going to be the GM until they’re not”.
“I’m not anticipating any difficulties”, MacPhail said. Believe me that will be an accomplishment.
