Petition launched to end Rotten Tomatoes for ‘unjust’ reviews
One enterprising fan has created a Change.org petition to shut down Rotten Tomatoes – the website that aggregates reviews and gives them a percentage score out of 100.
By Wednesday afternoon, the petition was on the brink of reaching the necessary 15,000 signatures for it to be sent to Rotten Tomatoes for consideration.
DC’s “Man of Steel” (2013) managed 56 percent on Rotten Tomatoes while “Batman v Superman” is sitting on a woeful 27 percent rating – but the films made a healthy $1.5 billion between them.
However, rather than accept that Suicide Squad may not be a particularly good movie, many overly dedicated fans of the DC Universe have instead pointed the finger of blame at reviewers, accusing them of “collusion” and staging a vague conspiracy against movie adaptations of DC comic books. After the petition gained traction among fans, its creator Coldwater added a clarification note saying “a petition definitely won’t shut down the site” and that the aim of the petition is to “deliver a message to the critics that there is a lot of people disagree with their reviews”. Not to submit to Warner Bros.to demand higher quality films, but to shut down Rotten Tomatoes.
Should you scroll down to read comments left on the petition, fans have flooded them with their sympathetic views.
Newsarama’s own Suicide Squad review is forthcoming. Don’t worry, though; I’m sure the 10,000+ people who have signed the petition so far are going to like this movie no matter what, so I can understand why they don’t think seeing it is a prerequisite to criticizing the reviews.
As Breitbart News reported Tuesday, the early negative reviews could threaten the long-term box office prospects of the film, which reportedly cost Warner Bros.at least $175 million to make and represents the last blockbuster of the summer in a season that has seen costly tentpoles flop one after the other.
He also tweeted: “Prefiero morir de pie que vivir de rodillas – Emiliano Zapata”, which translates to, “I’d prefer to die standing, than to live always on my knees”.
The re-visited Suicide Squad trailer promises more laughs.
