Petition to keep Syrian refugees out of Colorado gains support
Refugees fleeing war by the tens of thousands fear the Paris attacks could prompt Europe to close its doors, especially after police said a Syrian passport found next to one attackers body suggested its owner passed through Greece into the European Union and on through Macedonia and Serbia last month.
The Democrat’s remarks came amid heated opposition to his announcement welcoming Syrian refugees to Colorado despite concerns about the vetting process from the state’s Republican congressional delegation and 26 other governors in the wake of the terrorist attacks in Paris.
U.S. Sen. Cory Gardner, R-Colo., said no refugees should be allowed into the country who aren’t cleared by a thorough background check.
But Smith said he has more questions than answers.
“Governors don’t have the right to restrict people from coming into their state”. Tipton says he has sympathy for the refugees, but without any real vetting process, bringing them to the U.S.is a major safety risk.
They ought not be allowed into the United States at all, said U.S. Rep. Scott Tipton, R-Colo.
“There’s just a lot of unknowns and it’s a legitimate question”, he said.
President Barack Obama called blocking refugees who are Muslim on Monday as “shameful” and a “betrayal of our values”.
Both House Minority Leader Brian Delgrosso, R-Loveland, and State Sen.
Governor Hickenlooper released a statement on Monday saying he would work with the federal government to “ensure the national verification processes for refugees are as stringent as possible”. “All it takes is one ISIS terrorist posing for asylum to be able to enter the United States and inflict terrific harm”.
Lundberg wrote in a newsletter Tuesday that constituents have been urging him to oppose the governor’s decision. They say there are much more unsafe threats to Americans than refugees running from ISIS.
