Petition wants to re-name Calgary airport after Stephen Harper
Harper’s been a major figure in Calgary for more than 20 years.
Supporters in Alberta, where Harper remains popular despite his election loss last week, have launched an online petition to rename Calgary global Airport the Stephen J. Harper worldwide Airport.
“As much as I love our Prime Minister, I think we need to stick with a bit of history and tradition”, said another man.
You can view the original petition supporting a name change for the Calgary worldwide Airport here.
It had nearly 2,500 supporters as of Tuesday morning. Plus, there are two airports named after Tories already: there’s the Saskatoon John G. Diefenbaker global Airport and the Halifax Stanfield worldwide Airport.
“There is now a petition to rename the airport after Stephen Harper”.
Conservative columnist Ezra Levant’s site also floated one at the domain www.harperairport.ca, saying “it wouldn’t be Harper’s style – he’s not a show-off, he’s not about selfies, and an airport named after you is the ultimate selfie”.
“Best prime minister Canada or the world has ever seen”.
“There is a park in Edmonton named for the only city mayor to be found guilty of gross misconduct while in office”.
Petition creator Curtis Mullen wants to mark Harper’s accomplishments and is proposing the renaming of the Calgary Airport. One such mistake is bad enough, with a local politician whom nobody outside the province (and few outside the city) has even heard of.
A pair of Prime Ministers from Canada’s Liberal Party, Pierre Trudeau and Lester B. Pearson, have global airports in Montreal and Toronto named for them.
“Yea and did an excellent job for all Canadians so let’s name the airport after him”, said one man.
