Petty’s Garage Launches Mustang GT King Edition
Of all the racing family dynasties to make their mark over the years, few have been as successful as the Pettys in sustaining their legacy long after their glory days on the track have ended.
The Petty’s Garage 2016 Mustang GT King edition will be offered in three different trims, each of which will be increasingly limited.
A total of 300 King Edition models will be produced. The 243 regular King Editions get 670 hp, but the 43 King Premier and 14 King Premier Convertible versions get bumped to 727.
That’s a lot of money for a pony auto, but then again, those are supercar-killing horsepower numbers on a limited production vehicle with The King’s name on it. If you think of it that way, the Petty’s Garage Mustang GT was kind of a bargain. Extreme-duty TrakPak Ford Performance half-shafts, three-way adjustable front and rear anti-roll bars, and an upgraded rear axle enhance the dirty bits, and Petty’s Garage/HRE 20-inch wheels (nine inches wide in front, 10 inches in back) with Continental Extreme Performance summer tires complete the rolling stock. The King Premier Convertible is ostensibly the same package, only less the top.
After the go-fast concerns are handled, Petty’s Garage adds a custom rear fascia with a space for the center mounted exhaust tips, a new rear spoiler, a unique shift knob, new door sill plates, embroidered headrests and a serialized dash plaque autographed by Richard Petty.
The King Premier takes that same formula and adds different wheels, big brake upgrade kit with six-piston fronts and four-piston rears over two-piece rotors, a leather interior, Petty’s Garage/BASF custom Petty blue, red, and white stripes coated in crushed and tumbled glass, and Petty blue body cladding.
The starting suggested retail price is $67,495 for the King Edition and $90,495 for the King Premier.
Finally, in addition to the 727hp supercharger upgrade, buyers of the 2016 Mustang GT King Edition can add a racing spec suspension package and improved wheel bushings – although no price has been announced on those items. Sold at select Ford dealers, the cars come with a 3-year/36,000-mile limited warranty.
