Peugeot Fractal Concept is a 201bhp Urban EV Coupe
Moving on to the new Fractal concept, Peugeot has decided to accompany its first teaser image with a video.
What do you think about this concept vehicle from French manufacturer Peugeot, the Fractal?
This fall’s big auto show may not be in Paris this year, but French automakers are still gearing up to showcase their capabilities at the Frankfurt Motor Show in September. The Fractal’s main shouting point comes from its 9.1.2 sound system that looks to be fit for competition at your local modified vehicle meet.
Despite the aggressive looks, not quite.
It’s no heavy lump though, Peugeot says the Fractal concept weighs in at just 1000kg. “The style is inspired by the sound, and my design draws on the Peugeot Fractal’s looks and materials”, Tobin says. The lithium-ion batteries are also placed in centrally housed tunnels in order to improve the Fractal’s centre of gravity and weight distribution.
In what Peugeot is describing as a world premiere, the system incorporates a two-channel tactile bass system developed by American start-up SUBPAC and said to provide a new sensory experience. This is the design work of the Science Technologies Exploratory Lean Laboratory (StelLab), a partnership comprising of PSA Peugeot Citroen experts and academics from across the world. The sound is a response to forthcoming European legislation that states that all electric-vehicles must make some sort of sound while driving by 2019.
Further manoeuvrebility is provided by 19-inch “Tall&Narrow” wheels that are positioned to leave overhangs of just 520mm at both ends, and a variable ground clearance system that “allows the vehicle to adapt to different types of terrain” by lifting the body over a 40mm range.
Apart from simply playing music, the novel sound system gives a voice to functions such as the ignition, indicators, hazards, lights and various navigation features.
Step inside the Fractal and meet the world of 3D printing.
Inside, 80% of the parts have been 3D-printed, including the anechoic surfaces that guide the sound, based on a concert hall. Drivers can customise the 12.3-inch HD digital display and 7.7-inch AMOLED screen to suit individual preferences. This is a sound that plays when the doors are opened using a smartwatch remote system.
