Peyton Manning Dealing With Serious Foot Injury
Things hit an all-time low for the 10-time All-Pro when head coach Gary Kubiak pulled him from the game in favor of backup quarterback Brock Osweiler about halfway through the third quarter of the team’s 29-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. Manning looked like a shell of himself Sunday and needs rest in order to help the team when it matters most – in January. And it remains to be seen when he will make it back on the field. Rookie Trevor Siemian will be Osweiler’s backup.
The Denver Broncos were 7-0, and Peyton Manning was healthy and reportedly ready to break out of his early-season funk.
While Manning hasn’t been a big beneficiary of that, with injuries making the O-line a turnstile, Osweiler has taken advantage of his extra work with the starters, which showed Sunday when he led Denver on two late touchdown drives.
Interestingly enough, Manning had his best game after a bye-week. Manning went 5-20, for 35 yards, adding zero touchdowns and four interceptions. In the second half, safety Ron Parker picked a fourth pass from Manning and safety Eric Berry grabbed an end zone interception thrown by Brock Osweiler.
Manning came into this game dealing with various health problems, including to his right shoulder, right foot and ribs.
Though Manning declined to go into specifics about his meeting with Kubiak, he did acknowledge he was less than thrilled with where he stands.
“He’s grown from that”, Kubiak said.
Since his arrival to the Broncos via the 57th overall pick in the 2012 NFL Draft, Osweiler has sat behind Manning and played very sparingly, appearing in only 14 regular season games and attempting only 54 throws.
Osweiler originally committed to play basketball at Gonzaga, but once his football highlight reel made the rounds, he became a hot commodity, and he ultimately switched to Arizona State.
Nobody’s sure when Manning will return to action, but Osweiler is only looking at this as a spot start.
It’s uncertain how long the nagging injury will sideline Manning.
The Chicago Bears are 4-5, but have had two impressive wins in a row over the San Diego Chargers and then this past weekend over the St. Louis Rams by a blowout of 37-13.
“[Osweiler’s] basically had the football team on Wednesdays”. He went out there with all the confidence in the world.
“This is different: It’s all (Brock’s team) starting today”, Kubiak said. Coach Andy Reid said Grubbs made progress with his undisclosed injury last week, an indication he may be able to get back on the field for the game in San Diego…. He is still the Broncos’ best option at the position and is arguably the greatest quarterback to ever play the game. He can, however, play at an elite level when healthy. Although the Jaguars were not set before hurriedly snapping the ball with one second on the lock, the officials allowed the play to be run.
Kubiak was asked how Manning reacted to being benched and according to the Broncos coach, the veteran quarterback wasn’t happy.
And so Osweiler is finally getting his chance.
