PGA Champ Throws Club in Lake Michigan
This is something that most of the golfers would prefer to ignore, but John Daly seemed to have a hard time doing that while playing the par-3 7th hole during Friday’s second round.
However, the club did not go to waste as it was retrieved by a boy aboard a boat offshore. The 49-year-old also withdrew in 2009 and 2010 after opening rounds of 78 and 76 respectively.
Speaking in the parking lot later, Daly said he figures he’ll get fined and called the club throw more of a reflex than anything.
Daly, who earned a lifetime exemption to the PGA Championship with his 1991 victory at Crooked Stick, wound up with a second-round 82. Finally, Daly bailed out to the left side of the green, then helicopter-tossed his iron into the lake.
Daly – who donned the red, white and blue for his first round Thursday – fired a respectable 1-over 73 to open the tournament.
“The one I should have thrown is the 4-iron, not the 6-iron”, he said.
But Whistling Straits has been inhospitable to the big hitter.
He did confirm, however, that he will play in next week’s Wyndham Championship event on the PGA Tour as he continues to rebuild his game.
His round, the best of the tournament so far, put him at 5-under 139 and one shot off the lead.
