Philadelphia 76ers end historic National Basketball Association losing streak at Kobe, Lakers expense
The Philadelphia 76ers’ historic and agonizing losing streak finally ended Tuesday as Kobe Bryant suffered more defeat with the Los Angeles Lakers in his first road match since announcing his plans to retire.
Bryant made three of his first four shots – all of them 3-pointers – but finished 7-for-26 from the floor.
The 76ers said good riddance to the longest losing streak in major US professional sports: 28 games dating to last season.
Robert Covington top scored with 23 points as the home side recovered from an eight-point deficit at the half-way mark, to register their first triumph of the 2015/16 season.
The Lakers got a balanced all-around effort as they had five other players in double-digit scoring, led by Jordan Clarkson, who added 18 points, four rebounds and three steals.
Kobe wore it for the first 10 years of his career en-route to three NBA Championships and his legendary 81-point game in 2006.
But the biggest spark came on Sunday, when Kobe Bryant announced his retirement exclusively through a post on The Players’ Tribune.
The Sixers had a pregame ceremony for Bryant in which they presented him a framed Lower Merion High jersey with his current National Basketball Association number on it (he wore No. 33 in high school).
“God knows I can’t sustain that level of energy for 48 minutes like I used to”, Bryant said.
The poem, posted hours before Bryant took the court against the Indiana Pacers, read, “This season is all I have left to give”.
Scott signed a four-year, $17 million deal in July 2014, but the Lakers hold a team option for the final year of the contract. He walked off to a standing ovation and chants of “Kobe!”
NEW ORLEANS – Marc Gasol scored a career-high 38 points, including all 16 free-throw attempts, and grabbed 13 rebounds to power Memphis past New Orleans. “I believe so”, Brown said.
