Philadelphia Eagles trade QB as Tim Tebow awaits roster decision
Tebow, the 2007 Heisman Trophy victor, was cut by the Eagles after trying to make the team as a third-string quarterback.
“It’s a blessing to be able to play the game that I love”, Tebow said after the final preseason game.
Philadelphia agreed to trade Matt Barkley to the Cardinals for a conditional seventh-round pick (which is guaranteed if Barkley remains on Arizona’s roster for six games), according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter.
That turned out to be the case, though through much of camp, many observers felt Barkley was outperforming Tebow.
National Football League rosters must be set by 3 p.m. Central on Saturday.
Barkley’s value went down in the preseason, when he completed 27 of 52 passes for 351 yards and two interceptions, with no touchdowns. Tebow was 21 of 36 for 286 yards, with 2 TDs and an interception. He had 12,327 passing yards and 116 touchdowns for the Trojans. He could easily come onto the field in short-yardage situations and two-point conversion attempts to run the read-option, rather than risk starter Sam Bradford and his twice-repaired ACL.
And so now, if Eagles carry three QBs, Tim Tebowmakes it. But Matt Barkley is headed to AZ for a conditional 7th-rd pick.
Bunche, an offensive lineman, was hoping to make the roster as an undrafted free agent. “Whether we add a quarterback to the active roster or the practice squad, we’ll see”.
The results are expected, but also ironic for the Eagles.
Barkley was a fourth-round pick in 2013. He didn’t play in the third preseason game.
The Eagles didn’t announce any cuts, but so far, from various sources, including other media reports, it seems the following players have been told they are being released.
Tebow isn’t in the clear just yet.
For now, the Eagles are going forward without him.
