Philadelphia mayor helps restrain, calm erratic homeless man
In an attempt to have his voice heard, yesterday a clearly agitated 56-year-old homeless man named George Creamer approached Mayor Nutter as he was talking with some of his staff members outside of the Municipal Services Center and a slight scuffle ensued.
Nutter told 6ABC his goal in joining in the incident was to help calm and restrain the man, adding that he never felt threatened.
In the video, which was first obtained by Action News, the man appears to be trying to approach the mayor, but his way is blocked by a beefy bodyguard.
When a second homeless man tried to intervene, one of Nutter’s security guards shoved him out of the way.
Mayor Michael Nutter’s office says he’ll fly to Frankfurt on Tuesday and arrive in Tel Aviv on Friday before returning to Philadelphia on July 21. “I only sleep down here when it’s gonna rain”, Creamer said. Creamer was not arrested. The mayor was asked if he plans to increase his security detail in light of the incident.
The sister-city agreement will further opportunities for business, culture, the arts, and student exchanges, Nutter said.
He told Action News he just wanted the mayor to know the plight of the homeless as we get closer to the pope’s arrival in September. “There’s a very strong German American community here in Philadelphia, one of the first that was settled in the United States”, Nutter said in brief remarks at City Hall before departing. Nutter says he did not feel threatened at any time.
