Philippe Coutinho, Kane, Vardy: Names of the Premier League, Week 13
Everton comfortably beat Aston Villa 4-0 at Goodison Park to continue Roberto Martinez’s side’s good recent form. Whilst he still has much to do to be considered on the same level as the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo and Wayne Rooney, the Belgian worldwide has certainly made a promising start to his career.
Manchester United may find themselves above their two main divisional rivals – Arsenal and Manchester City – in the Premier League table following a 2-1 win over Watford on Saturday, but doubts still remain over their title credentials. They have many star players that can change the game to their advantage.
Back in 1987, the former Republic of Ireland global also scored in 10 consecutive league games – but he feels that his achievement is being ignored as it happened back when the Premier League was still just Division One.
Twe two holding midfielders are Liverpool’s Philippe Coutinho and Everton’s Ross Barkley.
“If you look at last season, the first 13 appearances saw one goal in 889 minutes, only 14 shots versus 41 this season”.
But they make the most of what they’ve got and work really well as a unit. All was looking good after 28 minutes when Olivier Giroud headed in (because of course Giroud scored another header) a Mesut Ozil free kick (because of course Ozil got another assist).
The defeat wasn’t entirely self-inflicted, however. It was his cross which was turned into his own net by Mikel Arteta, and the Republic of Ireland global caused Hector Bellerin problems down the left-wing all game, thwarting the Arsenal full-back’s ordinarily risky pace.
But his opposite number, Manuel Pellegrini, did little to prevent the Liverpool charge.
Jamie Vardy and Dele Alli are the feelgood hits of the footballing week.
Arsene Wenger has praised Jamie Vardy after the Leicester City striker equalled Ruud van Nistelrooy’s record of scoring in ten consecutive Premier League games, as per the club’s official website.
And the former Manchester United defender believes being called into the England squad has aided the forward’s development. But the improvement in performances, the tactical astuteness, and the fully deserved, dominant victories at the home of last season’s top two teams, are a greater indication of just how far we have come in a short space of time.
Vardy has excelled since his move to Leicester. He did initially struggle in Leicester’s 2012/13 campaign culminating in reports he considered quitting football. Manchester City’s loss to Liverpool meant Claudio Ranieri’s Leicester City will enjoy at least until the next match day their place at the top of the Premier League table.
