Philippines beauty crowned Miss Universe 2015 after big blunder
Miss Colombia Adriadna Gutierrez is speaking out after mistakenly being crowned Miss Universe 2015 during the pageant on Sunday night (December 20) in Las Vegas, Nev.
Miss Universe Host Steve Harvey explained that he made a mistake and didn’t read his entire card when he announced the wrong pageant victor. “After winning last year’s Miss Universe we’re a beauty pageant powerhouse and nobody wants us to win again”.
The Miss Universe contestant from the Philippines is this year’s victor but for one brief moment Sunday evening, it appeared as if it might be a repeat win for Colombia.
NBCUniversal and Trump co-owned the Miss Universe Organization until earlier this year.
“For us you’ll always be our Miss Universe”, he wrote in a message to Gutierrez. Miss Universe just had its Marisa Tomei moment.
But after Miss Colombia received her crown and a bouquet of flowers, Harvey announced he had made an error and that Miss Philippines was in fact the victor. She said she realized it was “probably bad timing”. “Thank you all one more time for all your support throughout this whole experience whatever happens tonight I’ll be coming home the happiest most grateful girl in the world”.
After a few minutes of pure shock, both Miss Colombia and Miss Philippines stood at the front of the stage. But unlike neighboring Venezuela, which has won seven Miss Universe titles, Colombians are accustomed to falling short of the crown, with five runner-up appearances since 1992 including Sunday’s. A staffer for the Miss Universe pageant came on stage to remove the crown from Miss Colombia’s head and place it on Miss Philippines’ head. The panel of judges included former National Football League great Emmitt Smith, celebrity blog mogul Perez Hilton and 2012 Miss Universe victor Olivia Culpo.
Trump indicated that he would take legal action against the network, but the dispute was resolved in September when he purchased NBC’s half of the pageant organization.
Trump actually sold the Miss Universe and Miss USA pageants three months ago.
