Phoenix police: Officers struck by vehicle; driver in custody
– Three Phoenix police officers were injured after a vehicle struck them and crashed into a gas station early Tuesday morning.
According to local Phoenix news affiliate KTVK Channel 3, Phoenix police Chief Joseph Yahner stated in a press conference that investigators have determined through the video and eyewitness accounts that the act was a deliberate attack on the police officers.
Fox 10 reported, “Police say 44-year-old Marc LaQuon Payne aimed at the officers and stepped on the gas, plowing into them”.
“Earlier this morning I spoke with two of the three officers injured during last night’s horrific incident outside a Phoenix convenience store”.
Unaware: Three police officers – aged 41, 36 and 33 – chat across the lot, unaware of what is about to happen, as the red vehicle picks up speed.
He alleged that “the suspect vehicle struck two of the officers, collided into a police vehicle and crashed into the QT causing extensive damage”.
Fire Capt. Rob McDade said the driver was hospitalized with serious injuries. The third officer was able to jump out of the way but sustained some injuries during a struggle with the driver during the arrest. Payne also will be booked on suspicion of aggravated assault as a result, Yahner said. This stuff needs to stop’. The auto struck two of the three officers and a patrol cruiser.
Howard says officers suspect impairment may have been a factor. “This happened to your Phoenix police officers”. All were taken to hospitals for treatment.
“This is a violent, cowardly act on our police officers and it’s simply unacceptable”, he said. “But this happened here, this happened in Phoenix, this happened to your Phoenix police officers”.
