Pirelli scraps nudes for 2016 Pirelli Calendar by Annie Leibovitz
IT MIGHT only be pinned up at the most enlightened mechanics’ garage.
Leibovitz said that when Pirelli had approached them, they had said that they had wanted to make a departure from the past and had suggested the concept of photographing distinguished women.
Serena Williams, Yoko Ono and fashion blogger Tavi Gevinson also posed for Leibovitz. And, in a move sure to skew the gender breakdown of sales this year, no full nudes. The calendar has helped put the Italian tyre company on the map of pop culture.
The most crowd-pleasing portraits have been of Schumer and Williams, both of whom are avid defenders of realistically representing women in the media. There is still some nudity though, as Amy Schumer is the “one that didn’t get the memo” photographed sipping a cup of coffee in her sheer panties.
Also featured in the iconic shoot, looking empowered was tennis player Serena Williams. For 2016, “The Cal” has Amy Schumer and feminist role models.
“Annie said “let your stomach out”.
A great fan of comediennes, Leibovitz said that Schumer’s portrait had added some fun. “I wanted the pictures to show the women exactly as they are, with no pretense”, Leibovitz told the Daily Mail. “I didn’t worry about whether they were wearing clothes or not”.
Pirelli, which is the world’s fifth largest tire manufacturer, produces an annual calendar that is presented as a gift to an exclusive group of “V.I.P.’s, musicians, politicians and royalty”. Then I literally didn’t let anyone in the studio from Pirelli.
Schumer posted the photograph on her Twitter account, where she has more than 2.6 million followers. “I thought it was a joke”, said writer Fran Lebowitz, who posed for the month of May.
The 34-year-old “Trainwreck” actress and comedian posed in barely there underwear and heels during the photo shoot shot by Annie Leibovitz, according to CNN. Christy Turlington and Naomi Campbell are among the supermodels who have disrobed for the cause.
The Pirelli calendars have been in the news for being notorious with its pictures in the past.
