Pirelli to stay as F1 tyre supplier
Pirelli has seen off the challenge from Michelin to remain as F1’s tyre supplier until 2019.
Pirelli’s tweet refers to comments made by Bernie Ecclestone, CEO of Formula One Group, during a television broadcast prior to the start of the Russian Grand Prix.
Pirelli said “simulation data has indicated [the medium and soft] will be the best choice for the brand new Mexico City circuit”.
On the grid, the F1 supremo shook hands with the Italian businessman and declared that a deal is done for the 2017, 2018 and 2019 seasons. The process to the formal FIA official nomination will follow with its procedure. The deal still has to be confirmed by F1’s governing body the FIA.
“We understand that Pirelli has got its way in getting a load more testing”, reported Ted Kravitz.
Pirelli has been the exclusive tyre supplier since 2011 and the current deal was until 2016.
