Pistons agree to deal with PG Jackson
Jackson was traded to the Pistons in February at the National Basteball Association trade deadline from the Oklahoma City Thunder in exchange for D.J.
Reggie Jackson is officially the point guard of the future in Detroit after agreeing to a five year contract, according to Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo Sports.
Stanley Johnson may be one such piece, Kentavious Caldwell-Pope perhaps another.
Jackson’s deal is among the richest of the NBA’s young point guard crop.
Could have Detroit kept Reggie Jackson for less money even with the players salary cap ready to reach sky high limits for the next season? The Boston College product averaged 17.6 points, 9.2 assists and 4.7 rebounds in 27 games with the Pistons.
The Pistons think Jackson, 25, can do that over the long haul, and that’s why they ponied up. It’s important to note that the team is still on the hook for $14 million a season for Josh Smith, despite waiving him during the last National Basteball Association season. Last year, Jackson was acquired from Oklahoma Thunder. The deal with Smith is one the front office is going to regret for a while. The market is overcrowded with great talent on the point guard position.
However, Jackson’s role may be redefined this upcoming season, considering that Brandon Jennings is expected to recover after rupturing his Achilles tendon. If he can just get back to his version of full speed by New Year’s Day, that’s a healthy recovery.
All needed more time to develop into all-star point guards. Moreover, Jennings has always seemed to put his own offense above creating such for his teammates ever since he stepped on an National Basteball Association court.
