Plane bound for Chicago evacuated for reported smoke in cabin
Passengers aboard a Chicago-bound American Airlines flight were forced to evacuate prior to takeoff from Dallas/Fort Worth worldwide Airport Thursday, the airline confirmed in a statement. There were preliminary reports that three people had minor injuries.
The fire was the second incident to involve a flight arriving at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport on Thursday.
Huguely says the jet was taken out of service and another plane would transport the passengers to Chicago.
There were 141 passengers on board and five crew members, according to the airline.
The incident occurred aboard one of American’s MD-80s, an aircraft the Morning News’ Terry Maxon said the airline plans to phase out by the end of 2017. The flight, which had flown from Orlando, touched down with one of its landing gear tire in flames.
“Upon landing in Dallas, Spirit Airlines’ flight 407 experienced a small fire on one of the landing gear tires, which was quickly extinguished by the DFW Airport’s Fire Department”, Spirit Airlines told ABC News in a statement.
The evacuated passengers were placed on another aircraft. “They did a good job getting everyone off the plane”, passenger B.J. Spirit says their maintenance team is in the process of repairing the tire.
