Planned Parenthood shooter wants to be his own lawyer
Fifty-seven-year-old Robert Lewis Dear told a judge in Colorado Springs on Wednesday that he wants to invoke his constitutional right to defend himself.
“I want the truth to come out”, he said in court.
Dear told 4th Judicial District Judge Gilbert Martinez that he wants to represent himself.
At a December 9 hearing, King questioned Dear’s mental heal and whether he was competent to stand trial.
The hearing Wednesday is an opportunity for attorneys to discuss issues in the case. Dear, accused of killing three people and wounding nine others at a Colorado Springs Planned Parenthood clinic on November 27, was charged with first-degree murder.
Martinez cleared the courtroom, including the prosecution, and conferred with Dear and his attorneys. At left is public defender Dan King.
In a previous court appearance, Dear admitted to the shooting, saying he was a warrior for the babies. As of this writing, no decisions have been made regarding the wish of the accused shooter with the unkept hair and long gray beard whose lawyer says is mentally unstable.
