Planned Parenthood shooting suspect pictured in police mugshot after three
She could not confirm the location of the shooter.
Eleven people were injured including four officers, and police arrested the gunman after several hours.
Police said they had not determined whether the gunman was targeting Planned Parenthood, which was in the middle of a normal business day on Friday, with numerous staff and patients present.
“While this was a awful, terrible tragedy, it could have been much worse but for the actions of the first responders, particularly the police officers involved”, Suthers told reporters.
Colorado Springs Police spokeswoman Lt. Catherine Buckley told local media that later in the afternoon, officers were able to get close enough to the suspect who holed up in a clinic of Colorado Springs’ branch of Planned Parenthood and exchanged gunfire with police.
Buckley said he was taken into custody at 4:52 p.m. local time.
“She was telling me to take care of her babies because she could get killed”, he said of the mother of three. He also said, “Obviously, we lost two civilian victims, we mourn the loss of a very fearless police officer”.
“She couldn’t say too much because she was afraid”, said a man who knew someone inside Planned Parenthood.
By the time the gunman surrendered, three people were killed – including a police officer – and nine others were wounded. Police have not confirmed the identity.
As the stand-off progressed, officers inside the building herded people into one area and evacuated others. Officer Swasey was on duty at the campus and responded in support of Colorado Springs Police. “She was calm, she was trying to hide from those people”, he said. Police told us they would be on scene throughout the night.
Clinics run by the national women’s health group have been frequent sites for protests since anti-abortion groups this year circulated videos showing a Planned Parenthood official discussing the sale of foetal tissue for research.
“The info we received initially is that (the shooter has) a long gun, but we don’t know the exact type”, Buckley said. The gunman allegedly shot out the rear window of one of the responding police vehicles.
Three people died and nine were injured in the attacks.
Police said the connection between the shooting and Planned Parenthood was not clear.
The man was said to have given himself up after officers shouted to him into the building.
