Planned Parenthood shooting suspect says, ‘I am a warrior for the babies’
This was the first time Dear had appeared in court in-person since his arrest, and Markus said Dear’s shouting “sent a jolt” through the courtroom. Can you describe the proceedings?
During the hearing, Dear said that he is a “warrior for the babies”.
The lawmakers have cited a video circulated by anti-abortion activists who contend it shows Planned Parenthood officials discussing the sale of aborted fetal tissue.
“It makes it the most risky call that a police officer can get, that I know of”, said Blair, who co-authored an Federal Bureau of Investigation report that reviewed 160 active shooter incidents that occurred between 2000 and 2013.
At one point, during a discussion between the judge and attorneys about the sealing of documents in the case, Dear spoke out again.
CORNISH: What was the reaction in court to all of this? That was before the judge granted video coverage of the hearing.
He cut off his public defender frequently.
Fourth Judicial District Chief Judge Gilbert Martinez looked at Dear and asked: “Finished?” And after that, he was pretty quiet. Investigators have not publicly confirmed a motive.
Anti-abortion groups, as well as many Republicans who oppose abortion, condemned the shooting and said they had no connection with accused attacker.
Three people were killed in the November 27 shootings – two civilians and a campus police officer who responded to the gunfire. Nine others were wounded.
CORNISH: So happens next for Robert Dear?
Dear will be back in court for a status hearing in two weeks.
While King told the court there were questions about his client’s competence, Dear said, “You are not my lawyer”. Until he formally enters a plea he is still not convicted of the crimes he declared guilt in committing. A first-degree murder conviction can lead to life in prison or the death penalty.
