Play suspended at PGA Championship
Walker shot a 2-under 68 for an 11-under 199 total after three soggy trips around Baltusrol Golf Club.
The five-time major victor set about steadying himself, writing the triple bogey on the scorecard and leaving it behind.
Stenson’s first major victory, after 37 previous tries, was a popular one, even on this side of the Atlantic, probably because the Orlando, Fla. -based golfer played so spectacularly and handled his three-shot victory over Phil Mickelson with such class.
If the weather cooperates – a huge IF – then the PGA is hopeful they can finish the third and fourth round on Sunday at Baltusrol.
Robert Streb became the 28th player to fire a 63 in a major as Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson crashed out of the 98th PGA Championship on an enthralling second day at Baltusrol.
“I hit a couple of the right shots at the right time when I had opportunities and my average shots didn’t get me in any trouble”.
Spieth, who shot 70 in the opening round, started and ended his first nine holes with two birdies. Under this plan, with nine-minute intervals between start times, the final twosome would go off around 3:25 p.m. The course was pounded with rain, and more than two hours later, the round had not resumed.
Just like Walker and Streb, he has never even contended in a major.
After a 1-over 71 on Thursday, the PGA victor when the tournament last was held at Baltusrol in 2005 hit his drive so far left on No. 1 that its first bounce was on Shunpike Road.
In a press conference, the PGA of America’s Kerry Haigh, who leads the championship, was peppered with questions about the PGA’s handling of the weather situation.
Such a round may not come on Saturday, as the threat of lightning in the area caused a suspension of play before co-leaders Walker and Streb had teed off. He could be in contention heading into the final round with wind and rain in the forecast over the weekend.
“The rain (Friday) really changed the way it’s played”, Mickelson said.
Kevin Kisner was one player to finish his third round, carding a 5-under 65 to reach 5-under for the tournament.
Haigh called the situation “unfortunate” but added, “That will be an interesting dynamic, for sure”. Thirteen of the first 22 players to play the hole made birdie and another one made eagle, while just one bogey was made. “Because you compare yourself, how bad you are, because obviously you tried the sport, and I look forward to that”.
Day was right where he wanted to be, three shots behind going into the weekend, his name high on the leaderboard for everyone to see. “It should yield a few more birdies”.
“I think a 61 or 62 is out there”, Mickelson said.
Previous year at the PGA Championship, Lahiri had finished tied fifth, becoming India’s best ever performer at a major golf championship.
Mickelson enjoyed one of the most visible challenges for 62 at the British Open two weeks ago when his putt for the record burned the edge of the cup. Eventual victor Henrik Stenson shot 63 in the final round at Royal Troon.
“I think it will be broken in the next two days”, Mickelson predicted. “I would be surprised it wasn’t”.
“My tee-to-green game, there’s not much wrong with that, ” he said.
